the commentary

One of the first things I noticed about this look was the distinctive cat heads placed as both a charm on the strappy heels as well as interspersed throughout the diamond chain design of the dress. It was an immediate nod to the house of Roberto Cavalli as it’s one of their most known motifs. You might even recognize it from Taylor’s duo-toned 1989 sets worn during the later legs of the Eras Tour.

As we know, Showgirl was conceptualized in Taylor’s off days of the Eras Tour. For the album’s first music video, it felt like an appropriate extension of the tour’s legacy for Taylor to pay homage to showgirls of decades - or rather, eras - past. I was particularly proud because this is something I theorized in early August as the video’s possible treatment! Taylor executed the concept better than I could have imagined - it’s easily her best work as director since transforming the ten minute version of “All Too Well” into a short film.

In this specific section journeying through different mediums and genres of showgirls in action, she nods to the ‘60s girl group The Ronettes.
