the commentary

Another designer whom you may recognize. Taylor wore one of their glittering rompers to the 2022 American Music Awards. With this collection, FW2025, the designers described the muse as “model, showgirl, it-girl, or an actress, and she married a billionaire, took all his money, and now she's this rich bitch who goes everywhere.” You could say she put the money in the bag, stole the keys, and that was the last time you ever saw that particular showgirl.

My first thought upon seeing this particular photo was its similarity to the theatrical, vaudeville, feathery elements of the “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” performance from the Eras Tour. Undoubtedly, it confirms to me that that revamped portion of the show served as a major Easter Egg and inspiration point for this album’s “Showgirl” aesthetic. Indeed, it’s a little Meta Squared² that Taylor would use a song written about battling the off-stage heartbreak she was experiencing in an incredibly on-stage way as a vehicle to channel the aesthetic of her next album which would be all about the inverse: the shimmering, glittering off-stage life she was cultivating after the stagelights were put out.
