the commentary

The feathers and bedazzled headdresses continue in this variant cover “The Tiny Bubbles of Champagne” for The Life of a Showgirl. From what I can suss out from the details of the photo, this is my current best guess for the dress Taylor is wearing based on the starry embellishments we can see. Besides the small snippets of the dress captured in the fragmented album text shot, we do know that Taylor has worn items from Annie’s in the past. Either through her eponymous label - Annie’s Ibiza - or a glittering cocktail frock from one of Annie’s stocked designers that align with her love of vintage or hedonistic glam like Clio Peppiatt. Annie’s longstanding love of embellished occasion wear and stock of vintage garments makes for a great aesthetically aligned choice for Showgirl’s thus-far established fashion.

Of the images we’ve seen, I think this could have made for a compelling option as the cover. Though I love the standard “Sweat and Vanilla Perfume” shot and suspect much of its intentionality will become clear when we listen to the album - especially that opening track! Here, there’s something hypnotic and mysterious about this particular shot. Whether because so much of Taylor is obscured or it’s the look in her eyes, but it feels like a snapshot that would make you curious about just what is underneath all the fluff that makes the ticking heart of a showgirl beat.
